UNFAVOURABLE OUTCO:ME OF EXCI:MER LASER REFRACTIVE SURGERY

Ahmed Mohammed Ali El-barky;

Abstract

Over the past few decades, different refractive techniques have been presented to offer the best visual outcome for ametropic patients. More than 10 years, the excimer laser entered the ophthalmic world and initiated a revolution of refractive surgery

There_ are two primary clinical applications for the excimer laser: refractive procedures and therapeutic procedures. Laser refractive procedures can either be surface ablation procedures ,generally
known as Photorefractive Keratectomy(PRK),or intrastromal

ablation procedures,

Keratomileusis(LASIK).

referred

as Laser

in-situ

PRK treats refractive errors by altering the anterior corneal curvature utilizing computer-controlled pulses of 193-nm ultraviolet light energy, which can accurately excise corneal tissue to an exact depth with minimal disruption of the surrounding tissue.

The principal complications of PRK can be classified as:-

A)-Comp/ications related to unplanned deviation from intended correction:- Overcorrection,regression,and astigmatism.

BJ-Complications related to stromal wound healing:-

Haze, scarring, loss of best corrected visual acuity and recurrent corneal -erosions.
