“The Relationship between Dental Caries and Black Stains in Primary Teeth: A Systematic Review”

Haneen Raafat Fathi Mousa;

Abstract

Background. Evidence regarding the association between dental caries and black stain was systematically reviewed to determine whether black stain presence could influence the prevalence or severity of dental caries in the primary dentition.

Methods. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, OpenGrey, and Egyptian Universities Libraries Consortium was conducted. Reference lists of all eligible records were searched manually to identify any other relevant records. Quality assessment was done using a modified version of Downs and Black checklist, and standard meta-analysis was performed.

Results. Seven cross-sectional studies, and five case-control studies were identified. Pooled estimates of dental caries prevalence and severity were (MD [ 95% CI]: –0.98 [–1.54; -0.42]; I2 = 79%; τ2 = 0.44), and (MD [95% CI]: –2.34 [–4.23; -0.44]; I2 = 85%; τ2 = 2.93), respectively.

Conclusions. There was a statistically significant association between the presence of black stain and both study outcomes; however, there was a considerable degree of heterogeneity between the studies.
