STUDY OF GLUCOSE TOLERANCE IN CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE ASSOCIATED AND NON-ASSOCIATED WITH HEPATITIS-C

Samir Salman Faisal;

Abstract

This work was conducted on 141 cases of chronic liver disease attending Gastro-enterology and Liver unit at lsmailia General Hospital. History was taken, clinical examination, liver function tests, fasting and 2-h post-prandial blood glucose and hepatitis markers for HBV and HCV were done for every patient.

According to positivity of Anti-HCV by using second generation ELISA (Abbott), subjects were classified into two main groups:

1- Group I (case group): 68 cases with positive Anti-HCV.

2- Group II (control group): 73 cases with negative Anti-HCV.

They were further subdivided into two other groups according to modified child's classification of hepatocellular function into:
Group 1: 90 cases, including patients belonging to group A

child's risk.

Group II: 51 cases, including patients belonging to both groups

B and C of child's risk.

Our results showed that 26 out of 68 CLD patients with positive Anti-HCV (38.23%) had an abnormal response to oral glucose, 16(23.53%) were frank diabetic and 10 (14.7%) had impaired glucose tolerance, while only 13 cases out of 73 CLD patients with negative Anti-HCV (17.81%) had an abnormal carbohydrate tolerance, 5 (6.85%) were frank diabetic and 8 (10.96%) had impaired glucose tolerance.
