Safaa Mohamed Abdel-Wahab;

Abstract

This study aimed at evaluating erythropoiesis in patients with chronic renal insufficiency and the prevalence of iron deficiency among those patients.

This work was conducted at the paediatric dialysis unit Ain Shams University. Group A: it included 10 patients with chronic renal insufficiency under regular haemodialysis treatment. Their ages ranged between 5 and 13 years with a mean value of 8.5 ± 2.7 years; group B: it concluded 10
patients with chronic renal insufficiency under conservative treatment. Their ages ranged between 2 and 1 7 years with a
mean value of 8.9 ± 4.5 years. Twenty healthy age and sex matched subjects were included in the study as controls.

Apart from proper clinical assessment and routine work up including haemogram, all subjects were evaluated regarding reticulocyte count, ferrokinetic study including serum iron, serum ferritin, TIBC, saturation index, STR and hypochromic cell percentage. Patients of group A were given intravenous iron and erythropoietin therapy for 8 weeks. They were re-evaluated after treatment regarding all previously mentioned parameters.

The study showed significant increase in STR in patients with chronic renal insufficiency both in group A and B compared to controls but it was significantly higher in group
A compared to B (p < 0.001) .
