Abstract
This thesis formulates an approach that could be applied in the analysis and evaluation of the translation of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea. For the purpose of this research three translations of
Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea are_chosen: الشيخ والبحر
, a translation by Ziad Zakaria, الشيخ والبحر, a translation by Muneer
Ba'albaki, and العجوز والبحر a translation by the Gabriel Wahbeh.
The introduction discusses some issues related to translation . The first chapter offers an analysis of some themes and language characteristics in the novel. Chapter Two draws comparisons among the translated texts of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea on the syntactic and semantic levels. An attempt is made to analyze the syntactic features that are present in the translated texts . The nature and type of semantic problems that may be encountered by translators are examined. Chapter Three formulates an approach to be applied in the analysis and evaluation of literary translations in general, and the translations of this novel in . particular. The approach adopted in the
analysis borrows from Hatim Basil and Ian Mason's Discourse and the
Translator. The analysis is made on the communicative and pragmatic dimensions of the chosen texts. Then the analyzed texts are contrasted
. with the Arabic translations to see.how the translators convey the
