Abstract
The main aim of the present study was to analyze the common oral• reading errors made by AI-Azhar female students at the Faculty oflslamic and Arabic Studies in Sohag, and to determine their causes and to suggest some remedial activities. Sixty students (30 from first year and other 30 from fourth year students) were chosen voluntarily. They were subjected to an oral reading test, which was designed by the researcher as one of the tools of the study. The researcher also designed two questionnaires: the first questionnaire was submitted to supervisors and teachers of English to investigate their-opinions concerning the oral reading errors their students mostly make, the causes of such errors and the suggested activities of remedy, the second one was given to AI - Azhar female students to investigate their opinions concerning the causes of the oral reading errors. The researcher recorded the examinees' oral readings on cassette tapes and analyzed them. Then these recordings were given to specialists in linguistics who reanalyzed the same errors to achieve objectivity of analysis. After that the researcher calculated and categorized the common oral reading errors into ten error categories. Statistical analysis revealed that students made different types of errors. Some of these errors
were more frequent than others, and there were no significant differences
between the errors made by first year students and those made by fourth year students. At last the researcher discussed the possible causes of such errors and suggested some remedial activities.
