Preparation and characterization of polyester resin for solvent based printing inks applications
Mohamed Hashem Mohamed Bakr;
Abstract
Polyesters are extremely versatile polymers which can be used in a wide variety of applications ranging from high performance materials to recyclable and degradable polymers.
In printing inks; resins have a vital role in vehicles due to they bring properties such as hold pigment to the substrate, and deliver end use properties like flexibility, adhesion and gloss. Considering all resins vary in their implementing of these properties, the common solution to overcome this limitation is using a blend of resins in ink formulation. Low molecular weight polyesters or co-polyesters are key components for printing ink formulations. Our research is focused on synthesis and evaluation of hyperbranched polyesters particularly that contain hydroxyl and carboxylic acid functional groups at terminal structural units. Also exploiting bio-based monomers in the preparation of polyesters due to their low toxicity, inherent
biodegradability, and relatively low price.
It was found that both of petroleum-based & bio-based hyperbranched polyesters are promising to be used as a novel film forming co-binder resin for solvent based printing ink formulations.
In chapter 1 details of a general introduction about various compositions of coatings & inks, general methods used for hyperbranched polymers synthesis, types, applications and raw materials of thermoplastic polyesters.
Chapter 2, synthesis of hyperbranched polyesters via a two-step process of esterification and polymerization including melt polycondensation followed by post-polymerization, using a variety of both petroleum-based and bio-based monomers. The preparation of polymers described as follow:
