Wide resection margin VS Marginal resection margin & their effect on local recurrence in osteosarcoma

Mohamed Osama Mohamed Eissa;

Abstract

In conclusion, this review postulated that the risk of local recurrence in osteosarcoma, whether in extremity or in pelvis, are significantly increased in patients who has undertaken the surgery with marginal resection margin. So, wide resection margin is recommended for patients with osteosarcoma.
There were several limitations in this study. First, most of the included studies were retrospectively designed, which may have selection bias.
Second, different chemotherapy regimens and different demographic characteristics among the studies are all the factors contributing to bias.
Third, the information for margin status has not been provided by most of the studies, which is an important confounder that affects to reveal the underlying mechanism by which inadequate margins, especially the marginal margin, increase the risk of local tumor recurrence.
Forth, the different follow-up periods, particularly for patients with short-term follow up, may underestimate the differences in local recurrence among groups with different resection margins.
