Effect of Adjuvant N- acetyl Cysteine to Clomiphene Citrate on vascular endothelial Growth factor in Polycystic ovary syndrome
Eman Mohammed Araby;
Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which affects 5 -10% of
women in the reproductive age group, is one of the most common
endocrine disorders. Vascular endothelial growth factor was considered as an important mediator of the this syndrome. It has been reported that N-acetylcysteine administration reduced plasma homocysteine level, decreased insulin resistance and decreased hyperlipidemia in polycystic ovary syndrome patients. However, it has not been represented yet the effect of N-acetylcysteine ..treatment on vascular endothelial growth factor.
The aim of the study was to evaluate propability of using VEGF as a predictor of the effect ofNAC as an adjuvant to CC in PCOS.
Eighty women affected by polycystic ovary, aged 22- 35 years attending infertility center in Benha University Hospital. All patients had spontaneous onset of puberty and normal sexual development. None of the subjects had taken any medication known tg affect hormonal state for at least 3 rri:fmths prior to the study and all were clomiphene -citrate resistant. Those women took progesterone in oil 100 mg to induce withdrawal bleeding. Females were divided into 2 groups, the first group (15 females) received clomiphene citrate 100 mg for 5 days starting from the 3rd day of bleeding plus placebo 1.2 g/day this was considered as a control group.
The second group (65 females) received N- acetylcysteine instead of placebo in the same dose, and this was the study group. Blood samples were taken before and after treatment in both groups.
