MODELING, DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF A TRIBOELECTRIC MOTION SENSOR
Mohammed Amr Amin Mohamed Adly;
Abstract
The triboelectric effect has recently been the focal point of global research. Most research focused on material characterization, enhancement and electrical modelling. This thesis aims to provide a better understanding of how the triboelectric effect could be utilized in the context of a mechanical motion sensor. A theoretical model was developed encompassing both the electrical and mechanical phenomena. A low-cost device was designed and fabricated to experimentally validate the model. Parametric studies were performed on the device parameters utilizing the theoretical model and with the aid of a new prototype. The effect of changing the various parameters on the motion sensor was observed and optimization techniques to further improve the device were considered. A hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and direct search technique was utilized for device improvement. Trial runs were performed to prove the usefulness and validity of the algorithms and optimize the device for various operating conditions.
