PHYTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF CERTAIN MOLLUSCICIDAL PLANTS BELONGING TO FAMILY ARALIACEAE

Enas Hussien Abd El- Rahman;

Abstract

Dizygotheca kerchoveana, N. Taylor and Oreopanax guatemalensis, Decne & Planch are two plants belong to family Araliaceae. Both plants possess molluscicidal activity against Biomphalaria alexandrina, the
intermediate snail host of Schistosoma mansoni as reported by Refah/4 ,
Ibrahim et a/.,0 73
and Shoeb et al.(2, ) for the two plants respectively.
In the present work, detailed study on the molluscicdal, miracidicidal, cercaricidal and schistosomicidal activities was carried out. - Major compounds that may be responsible for the activity were isolated and identified. Haemolytic index of saponin in both plants was determined as a method for measuring saponin content.
