Assessment of Nursing Compliance in Care of Children Undergoing Liver Transplantation

Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to assess compliance of nurses toward care of children undergoing liver transplantation in Intensive Care Unit, through assessment of nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding care of children undergoing liver transplantation. Design: A descriptive design was utilized. Settings: This study was conducted at pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Ain Shams University Hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University, and El-Sahel Teaching Hospital affiliated to Ministry of Health (MOH). Sample: A purposive sample consists of 40 nurses providing direct care for children undergoing liver transplantation and a purposive sample of 20 children receiving care, diagnosed with liver transplantation. Tools for data collection: Two tools were used which included Tool I: An interview questionnaire sheet to assess knowledge of nurses about liver transplantation included 2 parts: socio-demographic data and nurses knowledge about liver transplantation and Tool II included 3 parts: observational checklist to assess pre and post-operative care of liver transplantation included 3 parts: nurses compliance, preoperative care and postoperative care observational checklist. Results: This study revealed that the mean age of studied nurses was (27.98±7.65), and more than half of them had ≥ 1 year from last course for liver transplantation, more than half of studied nurses had satisfactory knowledge regarding liver transplantation, additionally more than three quarters and more than half of them had adequate performance regarding pre and postoperative care of children undergoing liver transplantation. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the current study, concluded that more than half of studied nurses had satisfactory about total knowledge and more than three quarters of them had adequate practices regarding liver transplantation. And more than three quarters of studied nurses had compliance about infection control for children undergoing liver transplantation. There was highly statistical significant correlation between studied nurse’s total knowledge and total practices. Recommendations: continuous training courses are recommended for nurses regarding providing care for children with liver transplantation about care of children and impotence of compliance bout infection control for children with liver transplantation should be distributed for participant nurses in intensive care unit.
