Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment as Predictors of Citizenship Behavior among Staff Nurses

Abstract


Organizations are facing several challenges due to dynamic nature of the environment. One of the many challenges is to satisfy its employees in order to cope up with the ever changing and evolving environment and to achieve success and remain in competition. In order to increase efficiency, effectiveness, productivity, job commitment of employees and had positive behavior, the organization must satisfy the needs of its employees by providing good working conditions. Aim of the study: assess job satisfaction and organizational commitment levels as predictors of organizational citizenship behavior among staff nurses. Research design: A descriptive corrélationnel design was used in this study. Setting: This study was carried out in all units at two hospitals affiliated to fayoum University, namely : surgical and medical hospitals at Fayoum university hospitals. Subjects: Study subjects are all staff nurses available (Convenience sampling technique) who are working in foregoing two hospitals (surgical and medical hospitals in Fayoum university hospitals) and their total number was (150). Data collection tools: Data in this study was collected by three tools: job satisfaction profile, organizational commitment questionnaire, and organizational citizenship behavior checklist (OCBC). Results: More than two thirds of staff nurses were satisfied regarding their jobs, less than half of staff nurses had commitment to their organization, and more than half of study subjects had high level of continuance commitment, while the low level was regarding normative commitment. The majority of study subjects were having positive citizenship behavior Conclusion: There was high statistically significant positive correlation between job satisfaction and organizational commitment, while there was statistically significant positive correlation between job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior and statistically significant positive correlation between organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behavior. Recommendations: Increasing staff nurses citizenship behavior by working on improving their job satisfaction and commitment to their job.
