Training Strategies: Effect on the Nurse Interns' Medication Administration Safety

Abstract


Patient safety is a key aspect in the care of the patients and one of the dimensions to determine the quality of care. The medication administration process is predominantly, a nursing responsibility. Lack of standardization of this process is a key contributing factor in medication administration complexity. Nurse educators must equip nurse interns with essential foundational information and fostering the transfer of their knowledge to clinical situations. The study aim was to assess the effect of training strategies on the nurse intern's medication administration safety. It hypothesized that the implementation of the training strategies affect on nurse intern's medication administration safety.
A pre-experimental one-group pre-posttest design was used in carrying out this study at Ain-Shams University Hospitals on 90 nurse interns. Three tools were used to collect data concerning medication administration, namely a knowledge questionnaire, an attitude rating scale, and observation checklists for practice of oral and intramuscular administration. The tools were validated and pilot-tested. Guidelines were developed by the researcher, implemented, and the effect evaluated by post- and 3-month follow-up testing.
