URINARY TRACT INFECTION IN EGYPTIAN DIABETICS

Reda Abou-Hamed Ahmed;

Abstract

Urinary tract infection represents a potential risk for renal function in all diabetic patients. Thus, in an individual in whom diabetes itself can alter renal function, the importance of such an infection and the necessity to
rapidly detect it is evident, as is the need to treat it
actively, but carefully. It is vital to always think of the
• possibility of these infections in diabetics.
The incidence of bacterial urinary tract infection is
much higher in Egyptian diabetic patients than in nondiabetic perons.
From our study, bacteriuria was found in 83% of the Egyptian diabetic patients included in this work versus 20% in the control group. It was noticed that the prevalence of bacteruria was not influenced by the age of the patients, glycaemic control, duration and type of diabetes.
The most prevalent micro-organisms were of the opportunistic type which can be related to the impaired immunity of the diabetic patient. In undebated fact, in our thesis, is the high number of mycobacterium tuberculosis (16%) isolated from diabetic patients.
