Effect of Educational Guidelines on Quality of Life and Self Efficacy for Patients with Colostomy

Abstract


Colostomy may be the best and safest form of treatment for a number of conditions including rectal cancer, trauma, or inflammatory bowel disease.Aim:to evaluate the effect of educational guidelines on the quality of life and self-efficacy of patients with colostomy. Study design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized in this study. Setting:The study was conducted at the outpatient clinics, in the National Cancer Institute (NCI), affiliated to Cairo University. Subject: Apurposive sample of 85 patients with colostomy. Six months or more after finishing chemotherapy and/ or radiotherapy.Data collection:1-Patients with colostomy knowledge questionnaire,2- Quality of patients’ life questionnaire,3-Stoma self-efficacy patient scale and4- Patient skin assessment sheet. Results: Thepresent study revealed that there was a highly statistically significant difference between level of knowledge pre, post and follow-upof educational guidelines.There was a highly statistically significantdifference between patients' quality of life pre, post and follow-up after implementation of educationalguidelines. There was a highly statistically significantdifference betweenself-efficacy of patients' with stoma pre, post and follow-up after implementation of educational guidelines. Conclusion: Applications of the educational guidelines have a positive effect onenhancing all aspects of thequality of life domains(physical well-being, psychological wall-being, social well-being and spiritual well-being), and allaspects of theself-efficacy (physical activity, psychological activity, social activity, colostomy care and preventing complications). These findings support the research hypothesis.Recommendations:Educational guidelines for patients with colostomy should be applied to improve patients’ condition, quality of life andstoma self-efficacy,and there is need for a simplified illustrated and comprehensive Arabic – language booklet.
