Role of computerized tomography in diagnosis and differentiation of the sellar and para sellar lesions

Hazem Hassan Eid Hassan;

Abstract

During the last few years, much progress in computed tomography techniques and resolution occured. It had replaced conventional radiographic modalities and became the method of choice in the initial evaluation of suspected sellar and parasellar lesions.

The sellar and parasellar lesions continue to pose a problem for neurosutgeons. The pituitary adenomata represents 10% of the
intracranial tumors; craniopharyngioma constitutes 9% of them in children and 3% in all age groups.While suprasellar and parasellar meningiomas constitute up to I 0% and 18% respectively of all intracranial tumors.
High resolution computed tomography has become the most specific imaging modality that if used properly together with correlation with endocrinal and clinical data can give the precise specific image for each lesion and accurate diagnosis.
This study was carried out on I 00 cases referred to the Radiology department by a physician who had suspected a sellar or parasellar lesion.
