A Research Study on the Design Parameters of Dual Rotor Wind Turbine

Abstract

In Conclusion, changing the D_ratio (front to rear rotor) has its positive influence on the DRWT performance, whether it is CWT or CRWT configuration. In comparison with the SRWT, the peak performance of the CRWT is 16.07% higher compared to the SRWT, while the peak performance of the CWT increased the peak SRWT performance by 14.3%. Figure (5.68) clarifies the performance of the CWT and CRWT and compares between them by showing the front, and rear rotors and DRWT performance. Taking into consideration fixing the D_ratioto 0.5 and the axial separating distance to 0.5 D_F, the comparison is held between the optimum operating N_ratio both the CWT and CRWT. The CWT is operated at N_ratio 0.8, D_ratio =0.5 and separating distance of 0.5 D_F. On the other hand, the CRWT is operated at N_ratio=0.8, D_ratio=0.5 and separating distance of 0.5 D_F. Although, the peak performance of the CRWT is at N_ratio=0.7, but in order to get a better vision for the comparison between the CWT and the CRWT, the CRWT is represented at N_ratio=0.8, especially that the performance at N_ratio=0.8 is similar to that at N_ratio 0.7 to a great extent. The comparison shows that comparing the front rotor of the CRWT to that of CWT, the front rotor nearly has the same performance except at high TSR, above of 7, where the CRWT front rotor has a noticeable higher performance to that of CWT. As for the rear rotors, they have same trend in performance to the CRWT and the CWT as they are considered having the higher impact on the performance of the DRWT. The rear rotor of the CRWT has higher performance compared to that of the CWT at TSR higher than 6. As for overall performance of the DRWT, CRWT has higher performance compared to that of the CWT at different TSR.
