Temporary Hemiepiphysiodesis In Treatment Of Blount Disease a Systematic Review Of Literature

Mahmoud Ahmed Elshobaky;

Abstract

Eight published studies involving a total of 144 patients (202 limbs) were suitable for inclusion in the present systematic review. This review carried out to list the results of temporary hemi-epiphysiodesis by various implants (8 plate, stables, Percutaneous Transphyseal Screws) in treatment of Blount's disease (tibia vara) regarding perioperative complications (wound infection, joint effusion, stiffness and knee pain), implant related complications (extrusion, migration, implant failure), growth related complications (over correction, rebound phenomenon, additional deformity and physeal arrest).
Then we discussed the systematic review that deal with the results of temporary hemi-epiphysiodesis by various implants (8 plate, stables, Percutaneous Transphyseal Screws) in treatment of Blount's disease (tibia vara)
In our study, success rate is 50 % with a considerable rate of correction of mechanical axis.
Our systematic literature review has shown that treating Blount disease with temporary hemiepiphysiodesis is not a straightforward issue and that outcomes are variable. the guided growth should be the first treatment attempted, even though we recognize that some cases will not succeed, and that osteotomies should be considered the salvage procedures. The literature shows that temporary hemiepiphysiodesis has challenges, but we think that it still is the gold standard of care.
