Evaluation of the limestone and claystone as raw materials for Cement industry, El Alamein area, Egypt

Mohammad Abdelaleem Abdelrazik Abdelsamie;

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate limestone and claystone southwest of

El Alamein city, North Egypt as raw materials for the cement industry. This evaluation is carried out through four stages; field investigations (survey and mapping), detailed exploration program (core drilling, field Lithology description, and laboratory testing), reserve estimation (geostatistical analysis and grade calculations), and economic analysis (net present value and benefit-cost ratio).
The studied limestone is located about 43 Km southwest of El

Alamein city, western desert, north Egypt. It is bounded by Longitudes

28°37'51.58", 28°38'50.09", 28°38'49.44", and 28°37'51.00" with Latitudes of 30°34'38.18", 30°34'37.47", 30°33'56.12", and 30°33'56.77" over an area of 2 Km2. The studied claystone is located about 40 Km southwest of El Alamein city and 3 km southwest of the studied limestone. It is bounded by Longitudes 28°40'13.30", 28°40'52.03", 28°40'51.57", and 28°40'12.80" with Latitudes of 30°35'41.33", 30°35'40.84",
30°35'11.71", and 28°40'51.57" over an area of one Km2.

The study of the regional geology of the study area, it’s essentially dominated by sedimentary rocks of Tertiary and Quaternary ages. The studied limestone belongs to the Kalakh Formation of Plio-Pleistocene pink sandy oolitic limestone with cross-bedded calcarenite interbeds. The studied claystone belongs to the Moghra Formation of Lower Miocene sandstone, loose cross-bedded sand, and with rarely fossiliferous interbeds of siltstones and mudstones.
