A chemical study on zinc in lake mariut and the nozha hydrodrome

Abstract

Despite of the massive publications on Lake Mariut and the Nozha
i Hydrodrome, no concentration has been given to study in details the chemistry'
of certain trace metals. Most workers performed researches on the total metal I
content in the water and sediments. However, no attention was given to the!
different fractions of the metals in both particulate and dissolved forms, or to;
I its species in the sediments of both water bodies. Accordingly, the present work j was undertaken to cover this gap, concentrating on the zinc metal in both Lake. Mariut and the Nozha Hydrodrome, which are subjected to different degrees of I anthropogenic and industrial pollution. Precise analysis for the spatial and ! seasonal distribution of the different dissolved and particulate fractions of this j
metal in both water bodies was accomplished on monthly basis. Study of some 1
environmental parameters, was a requirement to understand their effects in .
altering the forms of zinc and their levels in both lakes.
Lake Mariut is one of the northern Nile Delta lakes situated along the I Mediterranean coast of Egypt south to the city of Alexandria. The present lake I is divided artificially into four basins. The main basin under present 1 investigation (lake proper), representing the most important part of the lake I
receives most of its water from the polluted Qalaa Drain, beside the industrial .
outfall, of the Mogama Drain at the Northeastern comer of the lake. Gheit El- ' Enab Drain discharges the sewage of Karmuz area and the Kabbary outfall, at ! the Northwestem lake side, discharges raw sewage to the north of the lake proper.
