THESIS FOR PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF MASTER DEGREE IN GENERAL SURGERY
Kerolos Romany Naguib;
Abstract
Obesity is caused by a combination of excessive food energy intake, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility, although a few cases are caused primarily by genes, endocrine disorders, medications, or psychiatric illness. (Kushner, et al. 2007).
Obesity over the life course is associated with excess risk of total mortality, death from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, or accidental death (Park Y, et al. 2014).
Health consequences of obesity fall into two broad categories: those attributable to the effects of increased fat mass (such as osteoarthritis, obstructive sleep apnea, social stigmatization) and those due to the increased number of fat cells (diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) and metabolic syndrome. (Haslam DW; and James WP. 2005).
The main aim of obesity therapy is weight loss and maintenance by dietary interventions and increased physical activity (Lau DC, et al. 2007).
It has been demonstrated that bariatric surgery is an effective and safe technique for weight loss in patients with morbid obesity or obesity and comorbidities. (López-Jiménez F, et al. 2008; and Sjöström L. 2013).
Interestingly, Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass have emerged as effective weight loss procedures. (Lee WJ, et al. 2011).
