Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is characterized by a clustering of metabolic risk factors including abdominal obesity, raised triglycerides, lowered high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, hypertension and impaired glucose tolerance. MS is rapidly increasing in prevalence with rising obesity and sedentary lifestyles worldwide. Dietary lifestyle interventions including diet and exercise had strong relation with preventing and treatment MS and its related risk factors.
The aims of this thesis are: To estimate the presence of metabolic syndrome risk factors among adults and its relationship with their dietary pattern and to estimate the effect of dietary intervention on some risk factors of MS among selected adult cases.
The study was conducted through two phases:
1-First phase: Screening for risk factors of metabolic syndrome among (140) males and female’s adult cases selected from the National Nutrition Institute outpatient clinics.
2-Second phase: Dietary intervention (Suitable tailored diet, healthy lifestyle and nutritional education) for 50 cases that were selected with high risk factors.
We choose adults male and females (20-60) years and who are able to do exercises and movements as well as they agree to share in the study. The pregnant or lactating women, Sychatric or Al-zahymer persons, those suffering from cancers, cardio disease and hepatic diseases and those whom are applying special regimen were excluded from the sample.
Routine Medical examination including full history, general examination including family history of related chronic diseases like obesity, DM and CVD, dyslipidemia and Hypertension, Blood pressure was measured at baseline and the end of intervention.
Anthropometric assessment: (height, weight, BMI, waist and hip circumferences) at baseline and at the end of intervention for selected cases.
Dietary assessment: (24-hour recall, diet history and food frequency questionnaire).
Laboratory parameters: Serum lipid profile (triglycerides, total Cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL), fasting blood glucose, Liver function (ALT, AST), Kidney function (creatinine), Hemoglobin. The obtained results were analyzed by SPSS statistical. The results were reported as percentage and mean ±SD. The results were evaluated by using Compare
