PHYTOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON SOME EGYPTIAN PLANTS BELONGING TO THE FAMILIES RUTACEAE AND UMBELLIFERAE OF EXPECTED ANTIMICROBIAL Activity

AFAF ABDEL HAFIEZ MISSALEM;

Abstract

The work described in this thesis has been undertaken with the objective of searching for naturally occurring substances of potentially biological activities of some Egyptian flora belonging to the families Rutaceae and Umbelliferae. Through this investigation a useful information were derived from the application of the modern techniques of chromatography (thin layer, preparative and column). Also, spectral measurements such as UV, IR, MS and 'H-NMR were carried out to elucidate the structures of the isolated products.
The introductory part of this thesis comprises a brief account of the commonest structural types of both families Rutaceae and Umbelliferae encountered in nature and their medical properties. A special emphasis is laid on the most important biological properties namely photosensitizing activity.
The theoretical part of this thesis described the original work carried out and is summarized under the following titles :
Chapter I:. Phytochemical screening of some Egyptian plants belonging to the families Rutaceae and Umbelliferae.
This chapter deals with a phytochemical screening of some selected plant species related to families Rutaceae and Umbellifereae.
