Abstract

Title of Thesis: “Characterization of Low Temperature Facility for Non-Contact Thermometry at National Institute of Standards -Egypt”
Institute: National Institute of Standards – Egypt.

The major responsibility of NIS-Egypt entails physically realizing, maintaining, and developing the International System(SI) of units under controlled conditions. Those units and their derived units are disseminated to industry calibration services. Nowadays usage of wideband radiation thermometer become more common especially in food industries and medical applications. Hence providing traceable measurements for calibrating Radiation Thermometers )RTs) is necessary, and this can be performed by using blackbody calibration sources.

This work describes the stirred liquid bath blackbody radiation source to cover the concerned temperature range from - 30 °C to + 30 °C. It relies on the principal of linking non-contact temperature measurements to contact thermometry in low temperature range.

The main principle lies on regulating the blackbody cavity temperature based on a Standard Platinum Resistance Thermometer (SPRT) calibrated according to the requirements of International Temperature Scale (ITS-90), and then measure the related spectral radiation by RT. An intensive work has been performed during designing, fabrication, assembling and studying of the blackbody radiation source. The system is also characterized to check the improvements that has been made and reflected to the uncertainties of the non-contact temperature measurement.
