Abstract
2,3-Dihydro-[I]-benzopyran-4-one (1) and 2,3-dihydro-[l]• benzothiopyran-4-ones (2) were reacted with aromatic aldehydes in refluxing ethanol/hydrochloric acid mixture ( 1: 1) or sulphuric acid/acetic acid mixture ( 1 :3) to yield 3-arylmethylene-2,3- dihydro[l]-benzopyran-4-ones (3a-h) and 3-arylmethylene-2,3-
.dihydro[l]-benzothiopyran-4-one (4a-d), respectively.
