Abstract


Sixesty with suspected acute appendicitis were admitted to Assiut

University Hospital in the period from December 1997 to August 1998. -A:li---

-these-patient-were selected to be children_undei:--1-G-year. 24 patients had typical clinical presentation of acute appendicitis and 36 had either atypical or equivocal clinical and laboratory findings suggestive but not diagnostic of acute appendicitis.

On admission they were subjected to :


Thorough history and clinical examination, complete blood picture, unne and immediate ultrasonographic examination by graded compressiOn technique of the right lower quadrant to visualize the appendix.

illtrasonography scanning was performed also to the entire abdomen and pelvis to provide alternative diagnosis particularly in those patients with negative sonographic findings of acute appendicitis. Patient were classified according to Alvarado score in to two groups: (1) Group I score ?.7, (2) Group II <7.
