STUDYING THE APPLICATION OF ALGAE FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT VIA WETLAND (GREEN SOLUTION)

Shereen Yehia Shahate Said Ahmed El Agamy;

Abstract

The study main goal was to introduce a non-conventional ‎water resource to participate in solving the water shortage ‎problem in Egypt by using Algae and Wetland for ‎wastewater treatment. ‎This study was performed on drainage water from Bahr El Baqar drain in Lake Manzala Water Research ‎Station. A pilot scale wetland consists of four parallel basins were used for the experiment. Each cell was cultivated with one of the media Reeds plants or Chlorella or ‎Spirulina or Azolla alga. The water samples results were analyzed using VBA module. The removal efficiency of TN reached 80% by Azolla, while for TP ‎it reached 80% by Chlorella and ‎Spirulina, and for BOD and COD best removals were reached by Chlorella‎. The proposed system is an integration between Wetland and Algae bioremediation introduced as a Green ‎Solution treatment technique. The treated water quality could be reused, while the algae provides several byproducts.
