EXPERIMENTAL AND APPLIED STUDIES FOR ENHANCING THE LONG-TERM DURABILITY OF MUSEUM DYED TEXTILES

Maha Gouda Abd-Elbakey Moawad;

Abstract

• Trying to find different methods that can be used to extract natural dyes, enhance their strength and durability.
• Evaluate the application of different consolidated materials to preserve and enhance the long-term durability of dyed textiles.
• Restoration, consolidation, and reinforcement of some ancient, dyed textiles.
To achieve these aims, the study was divided into three parts. The first part deals with the theoretical part and divided into two chapters. The first chapter includes materials and methods used in ancient, dyed textiles. The second chapter deals with investigation methods, consolidation, displaying, and storage of ancient, dyed textiles.
The second part of the study deals with the experimental part. For the first chapter of this part, natural wool textiles were dyed with natural dye (madder) using two methods, conventional method, and ultrasound method trying to gain best results with the lowest quantity of dye, mordant, time, and to have the most homogeneous color surface to use the new samples in restoration and conservation of ancient textiles. The second chapter of this part deals with the effect of consolidating processes on the physical and chemical properties of fibers and other constituent materials of the dyed textiles. We evaluated four consolidants after applying to cotton and wool fibers after dyeing with the most three famous natural dyes for ancient textiles. Results of evaluation proved that we could use each kind of consolidants according to the kind of fabric, natural dyes, mordants, and the condition of the object and by comparing the results, it was found that cellulose derivatives give the best results.
The third part deals with the practical part of this study. The practical part is presented in two chapters that describe the practical works which have been applied to conserve three cases study that represents an Indian shawl (for the first chapter of this part) and another two decorated tablecloth (for the second chapter of the same part) and this part contains their documentation, analysis results and treatment procedures for cleaning and consolidation.
