Salivary Pepsin versus Oesophageal PH Metry as a Diagnostic Test for Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease

Abstract


his was a prospective comparative study conducted on 50 subjects; to evaluate the salivary pepsin as a non-invasive rapid test for diagnosis of laryngo-pharyngeal reflux (LPR) versus oesophageal pH metry.
We found that; the mean age of all patients was (37.5 ± 6.3) years. Regarding gender of the patients, the majority (72%) of patients were males; while (28%) were females.
Regarding GIT clinical symptoms; (16%) of patients had dysphonia or hoarseness, (36%) had chronic cough, (12%) had non-productive throat cleaning and mild cervical dysphagia, (16%) had excessive throat mucus and sialorrhea, (20%) had sensation of postnasal drainage and dysgeusia, (36%) had halitosis, and (24%) had throat pain.
Regarding endoscopic and pH metry data, (8%) of patients had laryngoscope abnormality, and the average % Time pH < 4 (total) was (29.14 ± 39.5 %).
Comparative study between the 2 groups revealed
● Non-significant difference as regards age and sex of the patients (p > 0.05).
