RELIABILITY ANALYSIS OF REINFORCED CONCRETE FLAT SLABS

Mohammed Ahmed Abdel-Razek Ali;

Abstract

Nowadays, structural probabilistic analysis which is known as reliability analysis has proven to be an essential approach to ensure structural safety. Several codes updated this approach in their provisions such as LRFD-based code.
The traditional procedure of the reliability analysis is usually based on prior identification of all probable failure modes which is generally known as development of structural mechanism. For every mechanism, a limit state equation is stablished with respect to design parameters which considered as random variables. Then a probability of failure is calculated for each mechanism using a suitable method and considering reasonable and practical assumptions. Using all obtained failure probabilities, an overall system reliability can be assessed.
In this thesis, the reliability analysis of one-bayed RC flat slabs is investigated. To do so the yield line method is used to predict the flexural mechanism of such slabs. Limit state equations are formulated as function of the main random parameters which are the uniform distributed load and the slab flexural resistance. After that safety index method is used to evaluate the values of individual failure probabilities, then the overall system reliability is obtained using the P-NET method.
To ensure the accuracy of the results, a parametric study is conducted to study the effect of main input data (mesh refinement and correlation coefficient) on the result.

1.2. Objectives
The main objectives in this thesis are:
1. Development of a procedure for generating limit state equations for all possible mechanisms of a specified yield line pattern and for calculating the failure probabilities for individual mechanisms and for the slab as a system.
2. Implementation of this procedure in a FORTRAN computer program.
3. Application of this program for investigating the effect of different design parameters on the reliability of reinforced concrete slabs.
1.3. Scope
The analysis in this thesis is carried out for one-bayed RC flat slabs that have only bottom reinforcement. It is assumed that there is no punching failure at corners column (punching is checked and found safe). only uniformly distributed load is considered.
