Ain Shams University Hospitals’ Registry for Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (The ASUH ICD Registry): A Single Center Experience

Abstract

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) improve survival in patients at high risk of sudden cardiac death, and their use has increased over time. The ICD Registry was developed in order to capture the characteristics and outcomes of ICD recipients as it provide a ‘real-world’ picture for patients, physicians, manufacturers, and medical services providers. A major goal of the registry is to provide feedback to hospitals that can be used for quality improvement efforts, decrease adverse events, optimize medical treatments, optimal ICD programming parameters, and as a larger database. Our results show an encouraging trend in quality measures among ICD recipients. This retrospective and observational study was conducted on 102 consecutive patients who came to Ain Shams university hospitals pacemaker outpatient clinic for follow up their ICDs/CRT-Ds at timeline starting from July 2019 till end of October 2020. The study timeline was extended up to additional 4 months due to the obstacles we had to face and precautionary measures we took to deal with a COVID-19 pandemic. The patients were subjected to history taking, ICD/CRT-D manufacturer, indication of implantation, medication post-Implantation, adverse Events, details of episodes of tachyarrhythmias or bradyarrhythmias, appropriate or inappropriate ICD therapy, if any, including: Rhythm, cycle length, and the type of therapy delivered (shock versus anti-tachycardia pacing) at time of follow-up. Also any modification of programming of ICD device zones therapies. Full clinical examination, 12 leads surface ECG, conventional transthoracic echocardiography report. The study population was divided into two groups according to indication of implantation.
