Aliaa Mohamed Shokry Abbas;

Abstract

Historical districts in Egypt have been witnessing accumulated deterioration and complicated contemporary challenges. These districts are losing their valuable role in reflecting the cities’ architectural and spiritual wealth. In the current information age, the main challenge of these districts is to preserve the authentic tangible and intangible heritage while coping with the social needs in relation to the evolving technologies. As traditional revitalization approaches for historical districts became insufficient to cope with the current era, there is an urgent need for new approaches. This research aims to identify the potential role of utilizing information and communication technologies in revitalizing Egyptian historical districts in light of the contemporary challenges. The strategies, principles and considerations required for ICT-based revitalization in historical districts is conducted based on theoretical framework and practical experiences analysis. The results of this study indicated that the Egyptian historical districts can adapt to the new approaches of revitalization.
