Abstract


This study deals with the adjective, which is one of the important grammatical categories in the composition of the sentence in addition to its main role in modifying, defining, assigning, or clarifying the noun semantically, while syntactically it is divided into three types, all of which depend on its relationship with the substantive: The epithet, which forms with its substantive a noun phrase, the adjective as predicate: it forms a complete sentence, and the adjective as noun where its substantive is deleted, replaces it and performs its functions, and accordingly the epithet was chosen to be the topic of this study as it is the basic and original type among these types.
In view of what Coptic witnessed, compared to ancient Egyptian Language, of the large change, morphologically and syntactically in the adjective category, especially in epithet, so it is important to have a comprehensive study of this category, standing on what it is as an independent grammatical category and deal in more detail with all its types, structure and origin of each of them, as well as the inflexion, the phrase construction, the description degrees, and their origins. All of that must be supported with texts, where the selection of Sahidic and Bohairic New Testament texts, as the sample for the applied study.
The study is divided into a preface that deals with the discussion of adjective in ancient Egyptian and Greek, followed by six chapters, the first four of it include the types of adjective, so the first chapter comes about simple adjectives, the second: the adjectives combined with verbal, nominal, or articles morphemes, the third: the adjectives
