Abstract


Effective communication has been identified as an essential component in ensuring safe and high-quality health care. Especially in critical care units because miscommunication has been identified as the leading cause of human errors in intensive care units. Critical care nurse rely upon specialized body of knowledge, skill, and experience to provide care to patients, transition that care and knowledge across the continuum require collaboration, communication within the care providers. Communication in nursing is a journey to a destination of clear meaning. It is essential in conveying caring and applying nursing skills and knowledge.
The communication of patient information to the next care provider also known as “report,” “end-of-shift report," "handoff," or "handover.” This communicates the information necessary for patient care to continue as planned. A bedside shift report should improve patient involvement, and allow for a safe transition of care between providers. The handoff among nurse interns during change of shifts in the study setting was inadequate. Therefore, the present study was conducted to improve shift report exchange through appraisal interview.
