Abstract


This review describes the use of third generation oral

. contracepitve pills, give an account on their metabolism, and their advantages and disadvantages.
The study entails a brief history about the pills since it is introduced in the . market till now entailing improved formulations, trends in oral contraceptive pill use and their " pharmacokinetics.


It also discusses the new progestins (Desogstrel, Gestodene and Norgestimate). Their mode of action as a contraceptive and their metabolic effects mainly on lipid metabolism and atherogenesis and the controversy about their
role in increased incidence of venous thromboembolism • (VTE). • The study discusses their hemostatic effects and their
effects on blood pressure and myocardial infarction. It also discusses their effect on carbohydrate metabolism.

From this review, we can conclude that the nomenclature of these pills and others as first, second and third generations is not the right one as it ignores both the structure and basic
