Abstract
ead and neck cancers are the sixth most prevalent cancers in the world with a global incidence of 700 000 cases per year. Cancer of the larynx is the most common cancer of the head and neck, excluding the skin. Most of these cancers are squamous cell carcinoma, accounting for 85% to 95% of laryngeal malignant neoplasms.
Major risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, asbestos exposure, industrial pollution and history of larynx cancer in a first-degree relative. Males are more commonly affected with a male: female ratio of 5: 1, and most patients are aged over 40 years.
Treatment choice usually depends upon local available expertise and the physician’s preference for treatment options. Treatment approaches have changed as the focus on quality of life has increased. Depending on a variety of different factors, including tumor size, possible metastasis, health status and age of the patient, economic factors, and preferred local treatment approaches, a treatment schedule is established. Treatment strategies today are focused on surgical and non-surgical procedures that have the aim not only of preserving the anatomic organ, but more importantly, also its function. Organ as well as functional preservation plays an important role in the quality of life of the patient.
