Muscle Quality Index in Relation to Both Falls and Fracture Risk among Community Dwelling Obese Elderly Females

Manar Mamdouh Abd El Kader;

Abstract

alling represents a major public health problem among older persons because it leads to loss of independence, placement in nursing homes facilities and death. Elderly are more liable to develop fractures due to many risk factors such as decreased bone mineral density (osteoporosis) and many other independent clinical risk factors as frequent falls, visual impairment, functional impairment, many medical comorbidities and drugs. MQ is a determinant factor of muscle function, loss of MQ may be associated with increase risk of falls and functional impairment. Obese women with fractures had an extended hospital stay than non-obese women .This thesis was conducted to determine the association between muscle quality index, obesity, risk of both falls and fractures in elderly women. It is a cross sectional study conducted on sixty five females attending the primary health care clinic attending the Geriatric hospital at Ain Shams University Hospitals. Comprehensive geriatric assessment was done to every woman.We assessed fracture risk among study population by Garvan calculator and Q Fracture 2016, fall risk assessment by modified Johns Hopkins fall risk assessment tool muscle quality index by dividing muscle strength or muscle power by muscle mass which assessed by Bioelectrical impedence .The study showed that the risk of fracture was higher among non-obese in comparison with obese by Garvan calculator and Q fracture 2016 (P - value: 0.008), (P- value: <0.001) respectively.
