Study Association of Serum Immunoglobulins and Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Egyptian Patients

Abdul-Aziz Mahmoud Mahmoud Elmaradny;

Abstract

Preliminary data suggest an association between serum immunoglobulins and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of this study was to further investigate the association between NAFLD and the serum immunoglobulins.
Liver stiffness measurement was used to detect liver fibrosis and CAP (controlled attenuation parameter) was used to detect and quantify liver steatosis (Fibroscan®). NAFLD was defined by CAP values ≥238 dB/m.
Atotal of one hundred Egyptian people were enrolled in the study and divided into two groups:
Group 1: 50 patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease diagnosed by clinical, laboratory and radiological investigations.
Group 2: 50 patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis diagnosed by clinical, radiological features of NAFLD and elevated liver enzymes.
Results of the present study revealed that the mean age of NAFLD was 44.4±9.3 and in NASH 50.6±8.5.
In our study it was proven that Nafld prevalence increases with age and also NASH and cirrhosis incidence also increase in those patients who are 50 years of age or greater compared with younger age groups.
Concerning gender in our study there was predominance of female gender in NASH group by about 70% but in NAFLD they represent only 48%.
