Three Dimensional Texture Mapping In Ray Traced Three Dimensional Images

Mohamed Mohamed Rehan;

Abstract

This research is concerned with the design and implementation of a RayTex a system for three dimensional textured image generation. These generated images can be used in important applications such as virtual reality, computer animation, and computer simulation.
Texture mapping is one of the most important techniques in high quality image synthesis. Early image synthesis algorithms lack the ability to easily describe small surface details. These details include features such as color change over a surface, or surface bumps. Texture mapping technique is used to describe these details in a very simple and easy way. In addition, it has a small over head in computation time.
There are various types of texture mappings . Each concerns with representing a certain material, surface, property. These properties include color, bumps, reflection, refraction coefficients, and/or any other surface parameter. In this work, surface details are stored and is accessed through a procedure which maps them on the surface. This stored data is called texture, and the procedure which accesses them is called a mapping procedure.
