Abstract
Bloody diarrhoea is the principal type of diarrhoea in which an antimicrobial agent is indicated. Bloody diarrhoea is usually a sign of invasive enteric infection that carries a substantial risk of serious morbidity and mortality . About 10% of diarrhoeal episodes in children under 5 years of age have visible red blood in the stools and those account for about 15% of diarrhoeal associated deaths in this age group.
Compared with watery diarrhoea , bloody diarrhoea generally lasts longer, is associated with more complications and has a higher case
fatality rate . The correct treatment of bloody diarrhoea requires that, the
mothers recognize the problem and seek for medical care promptly and
the health workers dispense an appropriate antibiotic, give ORS solution and other fluids to prevent or treat dehydration.
The pathogens causing bloody diarrhoea vary from time to another with the development of antibiotic resistant strains may occur by time, consequently , we must study the pattern of that pathogens and their susceptibilty to antibiotics periodically to give a rationale for correct and
proper antimicrobial therapy .
