ASSESSING CLINICAL COMPETENCE IN PERFORM ING THE TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT AMONG NURSES OF SHEBIN EL-KOM TEACHING HOSPITAL

Abstract


The aim of this evaluative study was to assess the nurses' competence in performing temperature measurement for adult and children.
It was carried out at medical, surgical, and pediatric inpatient departments in Shebin El-Korn Teaching Hospital in Menoufiya Governorate.
The sample consisted of one hundred nurses who were working in the above settings and whom agreed to participate in the study. An interview schedule and an observational rating scale were used to achieve the purpose of the study.
A pilot study was carried out on ten nurses working

in the burn department at Shebin El-Korn Teaching Hospital to test the reliability and clarity of the questions. The actual work was performed over a period of three months, started from february 1995 to May, 1995.

The main findings of the study were :•

1. About 80% of the nurses have a secondary technical school Diploma. Two fifth of them (40%) have one to less than five years of experience and the age of most of them (57%) ranges between 25 and 35 years. The majority of nurses (90%) were working as bed side nurses, and 10% were supervisors. None of them had inservice training program.
