ELECTROCHEMICAL STUDY OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF METALS IN AQUEOUS MEDIA

Samiha Ahmed Mohamed Awad;

Abstract

The thesis consists of three chapters.:
CHAPTER ONE : Is the introduction in which a literature survey is given on the dissolution of iron and mild steel mainly in acid media. This chapter also contains a survey on the different ways of corrosion inhibition and shows the aim of the present work.
CHAPTER TWO In this chapter the experimental techniques which are carried out in this study are given. These include preparation of electrodes, solutions and materials together with measurments of potential• time curves, potentiostatic polarization curves, weight loss and the volume of hydrogen gas which evolves during corrosion. The cells used, electrical circuits and experimental procedures are also described in details in this chapter.

The analysis of the low carbon steel used in this study is (C,

0.12; S, 0.026; P, 0.047; Cu, 0.032; Si < 0.01 wt% ). Measurements are done in either HCI or H,SO, solutions freshly prepared from A..R. concentrated solutions. The solutions are either used directly or deaerated by bubbling purified nitrogen tlu·ough them.
