TAREK FATHY ABD EL-AZIM-EL-ASSAL;

Abstract

In this work our aim is to evaluate the sequelae of E.I.S., their incidence with comparison to other previous studies and their relation to many other factors like presentation, Child's grade •••• etc.
The number of patients included in this work was 285 patients. A number 274 patients were presented for emergency E.I.S., 6 patients with elective E.I.S. and 5 patients for prophylactic sclerotherapy. All patients had esophageal varices
Rebleeding had occurred only in 14 patients (4.7%) in the
second phase in comparison to 40 patients in the first phase.
Rebleeding incidence was higher in patients with more varicea
In the second phase, the sequelae seen in our patients were rebleeding, ulceration, esophageal stricture, recurrence of varices, polyps, scars, pulmonary embolism.
+/- fundal varices. All patients were followed up by endoscopy for 2 +/- 1 year. Any sequelae of E.I.S have been recorded in the first phase and second phase. The only sequelae seen in the first
phase were.rebleeding, ulceration, scars. The most important was
rebleeding which had occurred in 40 patients (14%), while ulceration occurred in 30 patients (10.5%).
