Effect of Pap smear screening test on early detection of cancer cervix and short term nursing intervention among women using progesterone • only contraceptives

Abstract
This study was designed to assess the effect of Pap smear test on the early detection of cervical cancer among women using hormonal contraceptive methods for three years or more. The study was conducted in the Family Planning Clinic in Assiut University Hospital which is located among the out-patient clinics in the hospital. Data were collected over one year starting from October, 1999 to the end of March, 200 I.
The sample was composed of 325 women divided into two groups: group I: Study group: included 200 women who were using hormonal contraceptive methods for three years or more. group I/: Control group: involved 125 women who were using nonhormonal
contraceptive methods for three years or more.
An initial interview was done for both groups (study and control groups) to determine their basic knowledge about Pap smear and cervical cancer; to measure vital signs and weight; to do cervical examinationand Pap smear using both endocervical brush and Ayres technique. Tha data were recorded in a previously designed questionaire sheets. The women returned to the clinic one month later to evaluate their knowledge and cervical examination in addition to informing them about the results of the Pap test. Another visit (3" visit) has been done one month later to evaluate cervical examination. The positive group were divided into 2 subgroups; subgroup I: that received health education and subgroup 2 that received counseling about pap smear and cervical cancer.
