Nurses Performance Regarding Caring for Patients with Seizure

Abstract

Seizure is a brief episode of signs or symptoms due to abnormal excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. Aim: the present study aimed to assess nurses' performance regarding caring for patient with seizures. Design: descriptive exploratory design was used. Setting: this study was conducted in neurological ICU, emergency unit at ELsheikh Zayed specialized hospital. Subject: a convenient sample of all available nurses (50) working in neurological ICU, emergency unit at ELsheikh Zayed specialized hospital. Tools: three tools were used nurses' self-administered knowledge questionnaire, nurses' observational checklist and likert scale to assess nurses’ attitude regarding patient with seizures. Result: the result of this study showed that, 84% of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of knowledge, while 80.0% of them had positive attitude and 74% of them had unsatisfactory level of practice regarding care of patient with seizure. Also, there was fair positive correlation between total nurses knowledge and their total practice level while there was no statistical significance correlation between total nurses knowledge and their attitude toward seizure disease. Recommendations: in-service training program must be developed based on nurses' needs assessment regarding care of patients with seizure.
