Abstract

Treatment of periodontal diseases is considered one of the most important concern daily in dental practice. Periodontal disease is a multi-factorial chronic inflammatory disease of the oral cavity and one of the main causes of teeth loss in human, this chronic inflammatory disease that affect the protective tissues of the teeth has a complex etiology. As a result of affected teeth supporting tissues, intra-bony defects, recessions and root sensitivity formed. The ultimate goal for treating intra-bony defects is healing through regeneration and repair for all lost supporting structures. Recent systematic reviews showed that SRP was the most predictable approach for healing by repair and the adjunctive uses of anti-microbial pocket medications as Aloe Vera gel enhanced this healing and decreasing microbial content of pockets and thus reducing PPD and CAL. In addition, herbal and natural agents have been used for therapeutic purposes, taking the advantage of less side effects of systemic ant-microbial agents.
Aloe Vera showed antibacterial effect against periodontal pathogen and positive result regarding conventional treatment of periodontal disease due to its anti-inflammatory antioxidant and wound healing properties, this study carried out to examine the effect of Aloe Vera when used as adjunctive therapy with SRP in treating deep periodontal pocket suggesting to have positive effect.
The objective of this controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the influence of the Aloe Vera gel adjunctive to SRP through the clinical outcome of treatment of intra-bony periodontal defect and availability in the GCF as:
Primary outcome: Evaluate the effects of locally delivered Aloe Vera gel clinically as an adjunctive to scaling and root planning through measuring clinical parameters included modified sulcus bleeding index (SBI), full- mouth and site- specific plaque index (PI), probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL) from baseline and after 3 months.
