Needs of Patients with Renal Stones Undergoing Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy

Abstract

Background: Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy is recommended to be the first option for large and multiple or inferior calyx stones. Nowadays, patients spend a shorter post-surgery hospitalization than in the previous. As for patients who need caring at home, this period will be reduced more in the future. Assessing the needs for patients subjected to percutaneous nephrolithotomy is very crucial to facilitate their recovery and help them cope with any problems experienced after the operation. Aim: The aim of the present study is to assess the needs of patients with renal stones undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Design: A descriptive exploratory design is utilized for achievement the aim of the research. Setting: The study is conducted in inpatients urology ward and outpatient urological clinic at Fayoum University Hospital. Sample: A purposive sample of (81) patients who are undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Tools of data collection: One tool is used for data collection. A structured questionnaire sheet includes two parts: A- Sociodemographic data and health history B-needs assessment sheet that includes five categories (physical, Psychological, social, spiritual and learning needs). Results and conculsion: The study reveals that the majority of the studied patients have physical, psychological, social, spiritual and educational needs before the surgery in addition to the significant reduction in these needs after the surgery. There is in addition, a statistical significance relation between patients' needs and their characteristics regarding to: age, gender, income and educational level. Recommendation: The patient's needs should be assessed by nurses continuously. Developing an instructional booklet is to be given to all admitted patients who will perform percutaneous nephrolithotomy.
