Chromatographic Isolation and Identification of Certain Chemical Constituents from Brachychiton rupestris and Ailanthus altissima and Evaluating them as Antioxidant and Anticancer Agents”

Heba Raafat Mohamed Mahmoud;

Abstract

- Due to the vast medical and pharmacological importance of medicinal plants, two plants were selected to assess their in-vitro antioxidant potential and cytotoxic activity against HepG2 cell line which are Ailanthus altissima and Brachychiton rupestris. The objectives of the current study were attained through the following steps:
-Preparation of the 85% methanol extract of the two plants’ leaves followed by fractionation of the two crude extracts using various organic solvents.
- The phytochemical profile of both plants’ extracts and their derived fractions was determined based on standard analyses.

- The total phenolic, flavonoid and flavonol contents were also quantified for the methanolic extracts of the two plants and their derived fractions.
- The antioxidant activity of the two plants’ methanolic extracts and their derived fractions was estimated using five different in-vitro methods; DPPH radical scavenging potential, total antioxidant capacity (phosphomolybdenum assay), hydroxyl radical (•OH) scavenging activity, nitric oxide (NO•) radical scavenging
