PLASMA PRORENIN ACTIVITY IN PATIENTS WITH INSULIN-DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS AND ITS CORRELATION WITH DIABETIC NEPHROPATHY

Hanan Farouk Abdel Fattah Ibrahim;

Abstract

In this study we made an attempt to clarify the prorenin issue, we studied carefully characterized adults less than 30 years old and well matched controls, using refined laboratory methods. The IDDM subjects were adults with more than two years duration of the disease. The control group were well matched, that is IDDM's versus non diabetic adults.

The plasma renin activity of the control group ranged between .04•

11.7 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour with a mean of 4.7 ± 4.6 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour, that of group I ranged between 0.7-15.5 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour with a mean of 6.5±5.4 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour and that of group II ranged between .2-18 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour with a mean of 5.4
± 6.5 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour. We found no statistically significant difference between the three groups (F = .401).
The plasma prorenin activity of the control group ranged between
1.2-14 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour with a mean of 7.9 ± 5.2 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour, that of group I ranged between 16.2-27 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour with a mean of 22.6 ± 3.2 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour, and that of group II ranged between 9.2-24.3 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour with a mean of
16.9 ± 4.3 ng angiotensin I/ml/hour.
There was statistically significant difference between the three groups (F = 43.089).
